Mark Melton, #800, started flat
tracking at the youthful age of four on a Fantachino, an Italian bike.
He and his father, Ed, used to race hare scrambles and motocross.
The father and son racing team, in those early years, practiced their
riding on the family farm new Odon, Indiana where his Mom (Judy) and
Dad still reside today. At six years old, Melton went to his first
motocross race at Red Fox in Lynnville, IN to compete on his MR50
Honda. (His parents still have this bike.) From here the path led
to several amateur national motocross championship titles. In 1984,
he won the 125 B at the AMA Loretta Lynn's Amateur Nationals. In his
first year of competition at the AMA Amateur Nationals held in Iowa,
Melton finished 2nd in the 0-65 and 6th in the 85 Stock (7-11). His
second year of AMA Amateur Nationals competition was held in Reidsville,
North Carolina. Here he finished sixth in the 85 Stock (12-15) and
6th in the 85 Mod (12-15). The third and fourth years, he competed
were held at Loretta Lynn's in Hurricane Mills, TN. In his third year,
he finished sixth in the 85 Stock (12-15) and took a fourth in the
85 Mod (12-15). In 1983, his last year to ride the minis at the AMA
event, he took second in the 85 Stock (12-14) and 8th in the Modified
class. In 1984, he won the 125 B Stock at Loretta Lynn's at the AMA
Amateur Nationals. In 1985, he won the 125 A Stock at Loretta
Lynn's. In 1986 at the NMA Amateur Nationals at Ponca City, Oklahoma,
Mark won the 250 Pro Modified. In 1986, he moved up to compete in
the 125cc AMA Supercross series finishing 2nd in Atlanta, 4th and
5th in Detroit, 4th in Daytona to tally a 3rd overall in the series.
Some of his past sponsors were WP, Honda, Team Tamm, Hi-Point, and
Scott Goggles. He then decided to quit racing in order to focus on
college. He graduated from Rose-Hulman in Terre Haute, IN with a B.S.
degree in electrical engineering in 1990. He has ran several marathons
and he currently rides his bicycle over 200 miles a week and dabbles
in racing it occasionally. He is currently the co-founder of an investment
management firm that trades securities, derivatives and currencies
worldwide which accounts for about 1% of global trading. He lives
in Austin, Texas with his fourteen year-old daughter, Annie and his
wife, Ragan. He also has a younger brother, Brett, who also is a former
motocross competitor. His only brush with fame to date has been racing
bicycles against Lance Armstrong in an off-road duatholon--unfortunately,
Armstrong defeated Mark. |
