Turpin, Forest Park, Georgia, started racing in 1974. In 1981,
Turpin won the Florida Winter AM Series 80cc Expert class. In
1982, he became one of the original Kawasaki Team Green Members along
with Billy Liles. In 1983, He was the AMA National Loretta Lynn's
Amateur Champion in the 85cc Mod Class (14-15). In 1984, he was the
AMA 125cc Pro-AM Triple Crown Champion. Then he turned Pro in 1984
with the Honda Support Team. In 1985, he finished 4th in the 125cc
Supercross Championship Series. In 1986, the Georgia native became
the first Georgia rider to win the 125cc Supercross in Atlanta. He
went on that year to win the 125 Eastern Regional Championship for
Honda. Then in 1987, he switched to Factory Suzuki. He took wins at
the Houston SX, Pontiac SX and Dallas SX, and Pontiac SX. In 1988,
Suzuki moved him up to the 250. All in all, Turpin won 7 125cc Supercross
Championship Races. After breaking his femur at the Pontiac
Silverdome in 1988 on the 250, he decided it was time for a change
and his racing career came to a slower pace. Turpin still resides
in Georgia and has two sons, Brian and Brad. He and his brother. Ashley
(yes, he is still alive) are involved with coaching a little league
football that has successfully been to several championship events.
The brothers run their Father's business now "Turpin Horizontal
Boring". "One of the things that I am amazed at here at
the 2006 Loretta Lynn's Championship is the number of people and all
the motorhomes. All of these people must be spending all they have
on racing. When we used to race, we thought we were something if we
had a van instead of a pick-up truck. This is really something. My
boys want to start getting into this but right now they are playing
football. When they get a little older, they may take racing a little
more seriously." Turpin replied at the Team Green 25th Anniversary. |
