Brett Melton, #448, came on the racing scene as
a tiny tot at the age of four sporting his shiny new JR Suzuki
Automatic and riding in the shadows of his older brother, Mark.
Brett had his crashes just like any other beginner, but he had
drive and determination that has carried over through the years.
As a young rider, some of his favorite places to compete
were at the AMA Nationals at Hurricane Mills, Tennessee and
the GNC at Lake Whitney, Texas. And he felt that Hank Moree
of Society Hill, South Carolina was one of his toughest competitors.
Brett was always known by his motocross friends as a hole-shot
artist. Melton finished 3rd in the 1984 65 (7-11) class at the
AMA Nationals at Loretta Lynn's, He returned in 1985 to finish
5th in the 65 (7-11) class and in 1986 he was crowned the champion
of the 65 (7-11) class. At the NMA in 1985 he won the 65cc class
and also in 1985, he finished 2nd in the Sr. Mini at the GNC
in Texas. He has won numerous Indiana State Championships and
AMA area and regional qualifiers. His past sponsors included:
American Honda, Yamaha, Scott Goggles, TEAM TAMM, Hi-Point,
and Bell Helmets. Melton stopped racing to play high school
sports. He played both golf and basketball in high school and
college. He attended the University of Southern Indiana (USI)
on a Golf Scholarship. He graduated in 1997 with a B.S. in Business.
In 1997, he was NCAA Division II All-American in golf.
From 1994-95, he was All-GLVC Conference and was 1994-95 winner
of the Eastern Illinois Invitational. He played basketball two
seasons under Bruce Pearl when USI won two Championships. He
became a professional golfer in 1997. He has been a PGA Teaching
Professional at Country Oaks, Washington, IN. In 2003, he was
the PGA Section Assistant Player of the Year and he has won
six Illinois PGA events in 2003 and 2004. He played the 2004
Western Open and 2005 PGA Championship. He tied for sixth in
the 2005 PGA Club Professional Championship which landed him
a position on the USA PGA Professional Team that competed in
Ireland in 2005. He has had numerous PGA career victories. In
2005, he was also, the Illinois PGA Assistant Professional of
the Year. Melton, 32 years old, is currently living in Vincennes,
IN with his wife, Tonya and their son Brock, age 4 and their
daughter, Sydney, 2. |
