Billy
Abel, from Louisville, Kentucky, was introduced to motocross
at the age of eight when he entered his first competition on a J.T.
60 mini enduro bike. He rode many different brands of bikes during
his tenure as a racer including, Maico, Yamaha, Suzuki and Kawasaki
and was sponsored by Kawasaki Team Green, Jones Goggles, Lancer Leathers,
Barr Competition, Fass Gass Racing Fuels, Moto East, Competitive Cycle,
Wheels for Fun and Team Kentucky. At the peak of his career, his favorite
competitors were Tommy Watts and the late Doug Jackson. In 1977, at
the Mini Nationals, in Mt. Morris, Pennsylvania, he finished 3rd in
the 65cc class. In 1979, at the Amateur Nationals in Sacramento, California,
after finishing fourth in the first moto of the 100cc class,a
bad fall put him in the hospital with a severely burned shoulder.
In 1980, he finished second in the 100cc class at the Amateur Natiionals
in Springville, Minnesota. In 1981, at Buchanan, Michigan, he finished
fourth in the 250 class in the Amateur Nationals. Also, in 1981, he
finished first in the 125 Stock Expert class at Ponca City, Oklahoma.
In 1982, his first race back from a broken foot, he finished eighth
in the 125 Stock Expert class at Ponca City, Oklahoma. He won the
125 Stock Expert Class at the NMA Nationals in Ponca City in 1981
and won the 125 class at the Daytona Supercross in 1983. His motocross
career ended shortly after a motocross accident in 1994 at Lincoln
Trail MX in Casey, Illionois where he suffered a broken back and crushed
foot. Today, Abel is owner of Abel Construction Company in Louisville,
KY. The company does commercial construction projects such as
Rite Aids, Speedway and Marriott Hotels. Abel and his wife have three
